Last updated September 28, 2026

This article explains when and how to rename a Multi-Function Device (MFD) in PaperCut MF. Renaming a device ensures that the PaperCut MF Admin web interface accurately reflects your physical hardware and network configuration.

If you’re looking at how to rename a printer, see Renaming a printer.

Note: This article applies to all copiers except Ricoh (v1 app), Kyocera, Lexmark, and Canon devices, which you rename directly on the physical device or web interface. Please contact your PaperCut Partner or Reseller for help.

When should I rename a device?

You might need to rename a device in PaperCut MF in any of the following scenarios:

  • After relocating or moving a machine: When an MFD is physically moved to a new office, room, or building, the device name or location often needs to change to reflect its new physical location.
  • After hardware repairs or board replacements: Following a repair (such as replacing a system board) or redeploying embedded software, the device might register itself with a default name (for example, Ricoh-[serial number]) or an altered naming format. You must rename it back to your organization’s standard device name.
  • After an organizational rename or bulk restructure: Departmental reorganizations, changes to site or naming conventions, or institutional updates might require updating printer or device naming and tags (for example, updating site, building, or corporate unit fields).
  • After a server or network migration or rename: When renaming a print server, changing server hostnames or Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs), or updating device network parameters, you might need to rename or update the corresponding device to align with the new server environment.
