Changing the Mobility Server name in the client printer name

THE PAGE APPLIES TO:

“Help! I’m a Systems Administrator of PaperCut and I’m trying to set up Mobility Print. I’d like to change the Mobility Print server name the users will see when discovering the printers. Is this possible? What do we need to do?”

This is useful for organizations with load balancing software where the Mobility Print server name is different from what the SysAdmin wants the users to see.

Other locations might have multiple Mobility Print servers and want the server name in the connection string to be the same for all people connecting to the Mobility services.

Sometimes people do not want the server name in the connection string at all or the print server name is not actually helpful and would like to change this to a different name.

The examples below are instructions to completely remove the name on Windows and Mac but you have the power to set the name to any value supported on the Location field of the printer’s property page.

Modify the printer Location field in Windows

  1. Open Print Management by pressing Windows key + R, then type printmanagement.msc and press Enter..

  2. Right-click on the printer you want to manage and choose Properties….

  3. Click on the General tab.

  4. Type the location name. The screenshot below has a space in this field but any Windows supported character is valid.

  5. Either restart the Mobility Print service to experience the change immediately or wait ten to fifteen minutes for the service to automatically update the information.

The search will go from this:

To this:

When the printer has been added to a Windows machine, when printing, it will look like this:

For locations with a Find-Me printer configuration, the change is only needed on a few printers but for organizations which need to update this field on all their printers, please use PowerShell to accomplish this task.

Open the PowerShell command window using Run as Administrator and execute the command below to place a space in the Location field of all printers on a Windows print server.

Set-Printer -Name * -Location " "

Modify the printer Location field in Mac OS

CUPS does not support a blank space so you will need to use a “.” , “ _”, or similar character.

  1. Connect to the CUPS print system admin interface. http://localhost:631/

  2. Select Administration.

  3. Modify the printer settings and update the Location field with your choice of character.

  4. Either restart the Mobility Print service to experience the change immediately or wait ten to fifteen minutes for the service to automatically update the information.

Printer discovery on a Mac client will now be like this:

The printer is now listed on the Mac client like this:
