Note: this article refers to installing the full PaperCut Server product. If you’re from a school / college / university and are looking to find how to login to PaperCut or how to install the PaperCut client, you’ll need to contact your Administration or IT Administration department to see what address to access at your location.
Windows Defender SmartScreen
Microsoft SmartScreen is a component of the non-server Windows 8 and Windows 10 operating systems meant to provide anti-phishing and anti-malware protection. Incidentally, it helps build a reputation for software like PaperCut NG and PaperCut MF after surpassing a sufficient threshold.
If an installer or program has a low reputation, the operating system shows users warnings when attempting to install the software. This countermeasure means to prevent malware, viruses, and trojans from compromising non-server OSes.
Below is a screencap of SmartScreen in action:
You may see this message when you download and run the PaperCut NG, PaperCut MF, or Payment Gateway Module installers. The notification is due to PaperCut’s recent introduction of a new software signing certificate that has yet to build up trust with Microsoft. This message is not a concern for the PaperCut NG, PaperCut MF, or Payment Gateway Module software.
Luckily, the workaround, for the time being, is simple: clicking “More info” reveals the option to “Run anyway.” We expect to establish trust relatively quickly and this message not to appear for future PaperCut NG, PaperCut MF, Payment Gateway Module releases.
