Overview
Since the launch of Windows Protected Print Mode (WPP) in late 2024, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to make the transition easier for PaperCut MF and NG customers ready to adopt Microsoft’s latest security feature.
As of 26 November 2024, PaperCut MF and NG offer introductory support for Windows Protected Print Mode (WPP). This initial phase introduces simple printing functionality for organizations using WPP-enabled Windows devices and ensures secure and seamless printing, even with non-WPP-ready printers.
If you’re already using Mobility Print queues with Print Deploy (and over 50% of you are) and you don’t require advanced finishing needs (like stapling, tray selection, hole punching and binding), you’ll be pleased to know that our first WPP support release will work out the box for you even if your printers are not WPP ready. Yep, just like that 🚀
If your requirements are more advanced, look at our roadmap below. If the first release doesn’t cover your needs, you can still sign up for this percolator and we’ll inform you when updates are available. We might contact you to learn about your environment to ensure we cover your needs.
A PaperCut Hive/Pocket solution will follow shortly, so keep an eye out for a separate early access registration if you are using PaperCut Hive or PaperCut Pocket.
How it works
If you’re using PaperCut MF or NG with Print Deploy and Mobility Print, you’re most of the way there. Here’s what you need to know to get WPP printing up and running.
Already using Print Deploy and Mobility Print?
Good news — you may not need to do anything. If your queues were deployed via Print Deploy and point to your Mobility Print server, WPP printing should just work. The Print Deploy client now automatically detects if WPP is enabled and installs Mobility queues in a WPP-compatible way.
Not set up yet?
If you haven’t set up Mobility Print or Print Deploy, here’s what to do:
- Install Mobility Print
Mobility Print is used by over 100,000 organizations worldwide and supports printing from just about any device. It creates IPP/IPPS queues that WPP trusts and works even if your printers aren’t WPP compatible.
Set up Mobility Print - Deploy the queues with Print Deploy
Import the Mobility Print queues into Print Deploy so they’re automatically pushed to the right users.

Why this works
Windows Protected Print sends print jobs in PDF format. So does PaperCut Mobility Print — it’s how we handle Chromebook and Android printing too. The Mobility Print server transforms the PDF based print job to a Page Description Language (PDL) that the printer understands. This means, even if you are using a printer that is not WPP-compatible, it still prints just fine.
No drivers. No config changes. Just secure printing, powered by Mobility Print.
