Cutting to the chase

Problem

With numerous printers across multiple locations, this community bank was having real issues with their current system

Solution

PaperCut NG made it easy to provide the right drivers to the right printers and offered an array of other benefits at the same time

Outcome

An online solution that solved all the problems and was less expensive than other options

With a history going back to 1941, Premier Community Bank is headquartered in Marion, Wisconsin and has eleven branches across the northeast of the state. It’s a bank that offers all the products and services of a big-city bank but with a friendly, hometown feel that’s tailored to the specific needs of Wisconsinites.

Around 120 employees of Premier Community Bank serve the communities of Marion, Tigerton, Shawano, Pulaski, Bear Creek, Manawa, Iola, Waupaca, Fremont, and Winneconne. This means relying on a network of over 30 printers, across various locations.

In 2022, the bank was struggling with the issues caused by PrintNightmare, a critical security vulnerability that had been discovered the year before. To respond to this vulnerability, Microsoft had released multiple patches for its various operating systems. A crucial element of these patches was removing the opportunity for users to install their own printer drivers. Unfortunately, this requirement caused huge problems for the bank’s employees and, after 18 months of issues and failed workarounds, it was clear that a new approach was needed.

PaperCut NG stood out because we could host everything online and it was less cumbersome and expensive than other options."

AVP Information Technology, Premier Community Bank

Problem

With numerous printers across multiple locations, this community bank was having real issues with their current system

Premier Community Bank needed a printing system that made it easy for multiple users in multiple locations to have easy access to printers near them and download printer drivers when necessary.

The PrintNightmare security vulnerability had resulted in patches that prevented non-administrators from installing drivers. Numerous attempts at rectifying the situation had all failed and finding a solution became essential.

Solution

PaperCut NG made it easy to provide the right drivers to the right printers and offered an array of other benefits at the same time

It quickly became clear that PaperCut NG offered the online print management that the bank required at a lower cost than other systems on the market.

As Dennis Federwitz - the bank’s assistant vice president of IT - explains, “We have so many users at different locations and so many printers, it’s a lot easier to push out print drivers to certain locations for certain printers. So not everybody sees every printer.”

With that problem fixed, they were also able to appreciate the many other benefits offered by PaperCut NG. These include:

  • In-depth insights into print activity
  • Access to print logs and archiving
  • Automatic reminders to help users follow the company’s print policies
  • Seamless compatibility with all kinds of devices and brands of printer

Outcome

An online solution that solved all the problems and was less expensive than other options

Dennis was delighted by how simple PaperCut NG was to set up. He notes, “We have a significant number of VPN users, and I was able to easily push printers to people remotely.”

He’s also happy with the level of visibility the software offers: “I check the logs occasionally, to see if a person has an issue with printing. All the details are right there. We also default our printers to black and white, so I know I can look at a report to see who’s printing in colour to see if it’s being abused. We’re also considering introducing email notifications to prepare for events like running out of toner or something like that.”
