Printing a Print To File

PaperCut tech support sometimes requests print-to-files to help diagnose problems with page analysis or watermarking. PaperCut developers run these print-to-files against the PaperCut Print Provider code to narrow down what is causing the problems.

In some cases PaperCut developers will not be able to reproduce problems with print-to-files because the problems are specific to a customer’s printers. In this case PaperCut developers may create print-to-files that will show the problems they are looking for and ask customers to print these files on their printers.

This articles explains how to do this.

Steps for printing a print-to-file in Windows

  1. Go to Devices and Printers.
  2. Select the printer you wish to print to.
  3. Right-click on the printer and select Printer Properties.
  4. Select the Sharing tab.
  5. Share this printer.
  6. Note the share name.
  7. Open a Windows command prompt and type
    1. copy _file-name_ \\_server-name_\_printer-share-name_
    2. where
      1. _file-name_ is the name of the print-to-file
      2. _server-name_ is the name of the computer the printer is connected to
      3. _printer-share-name_ is the share name of the printer
