Translating PaperCut into languages other than English

THE PAGE APPLIES TO:

PaperCut is designed to be quickly translated into any language. A number of the main languages are maintained by PaperCut Software. Other, less common languages, are maintained in a cooperative community fashion by our users, customers, ASCs and regional resellers.

(If you do assist us with translation, please make yourself known to our development team. End-customers regularly assisting with translation have access to free upgrades for the releases they help out with!)

Translations can be classed into two levels:

  1. Basic user-facing translation: this involves translating the areas of the application such as the user client tool, and the web interface used by end-users to check their account balance. The administration interface remains in the default English language. This is suitable when administrators of the software are comfortable with English.

  2. Full translation: all areas of the application including the administration interface. This is suitable when administrators of the software would prefer to work in their local language.

Translations are best done by a person who:

  • is a native speaker of the target language
  • has good English language skills
  • has a computing or technical background
  • understands PaperCut’s features

A full professional-level translation (excluding documentation) usually takes at least 30 hours. It’s a tedious process and one best done in a number of stages!

How to Contribute

1. Translation system access

Contact the PaperCut Sales Team to obtain access to the translation system.

2. Translation

Click on PaperCut project and under Translations tab, you will be able to see all the untranslated segments/strings. These strings are presented in English and have blank text boxes for the translated equivalent.

TIPS:

1. The symbols {0}, {1}, {2} etc denote place holders and are replaced by the application. The translated string needs to contact the same place holders. For example:

The printer "{0}" was manually edited by "{1}"

may become

L''imprimante "{0}" a été manuellement éditée par "{1}"

2. As illustrated above, strings with replacement place holders require apostrophes to be doubled-up i.e. two consecutive apostrophes (not talking marks!)

3. Don’t translate string sections marked with % place holders. For example %PAGES%.

4. Most strings are single lines. Multi-line strings are denoted by small grey paragraph markers. There is no need to include the paragraph markers in the translation. Just hit Enter where the new lines are required.

5. Please try to keep the translations to a similar length as the English translations. If the translations are too long they may not display properly on the screens.

6. If you’re undertaking the basic translation, only some sections need to be translated. See the additional notes below detailing these sections.

7. For context, you can press the settings ‘cog’ icon of the translation and select Show details. The File entry provides context to where the key is utilised.

3. Testing

Testing translations is generally performed by PaperCut developers as part of each release. If you have special requirements then you may request a custom build of PaperCut that contains your updated translations by submitting a ticket to the support team ( http://support.papercut.com ).

4. Release

a) If the language you are translating into is already available as an option in PaperCut, your new translations will be available in the next release.

b) If you are translating into a new language, inform ( http://support.papercut.com ) when you feel that the translation is ready to release. A custom build of PaperCut will be provided that contains your translations. Once everyone is happy with the result the new language option can be made available in a public release.

5. Other translation areas

It is also possible to translate the Windows installer program into the local language. If you’d like to conduct this level of translation (or other areas), please contact us via ( http://support.papercut.com ).

Q When will my translations be available?

In general, once the translations have been added to the translation tool they are manually added to the product in the next upcoming release, so keep an eye on our release history page. If there is a new version that has been released since the translations were added, the new release should include those translations.

Q When are the translations available for PaperCut embedded devices?

Translations for PaperCut embedded solutions might not be available in the upcoming release straight away. Some of the embeddeds need to go through a certification process before they can be included in the product. (i.e. Canon, Lexmark, Kyocera, Ricoh) The certification process can take a few months so the translations for those embeddeds are available once the respective binary for that embedded has been certified.

Q If I notice a translation mistake/issue, how do I get this resolved?

You can reach out to us via ( http://support.papercut.com ). When reporting a translation issue, please make sure you include the following information:

  1. Version of PaperCut
  2. Screenshot of the page which demonstrates the issue
  3. The language in which you are using PaperCut
