How do I choose a license?
PaperCut is supplied as a true enterprise-wide license. There are no limits on the number of servers,
workstations, or printers. Nor do we charge extra for features such as clustering, or monitoring
locally attached printers. The license cost is instead only based on the number of users on
your network ensuring the license price is only a function of your organization size.
Our licensing policy is well established and has changed little in over 10 years. It was set
initially by the development team (not the Marketing Department!) with the aim of ensuring
that the licensing model "does not get in your way or dictate your technology choices as an administrator".
Licenses are issued as follows:
- Price is based on the number of users in the organization.
- A "user" is as a domain/directory logon account (as imported/created in the PaperCut database).
- Licenses are for a single organization/enterprise only.
- There are no mandatory annual fees - a once off purchase.
- A license may be used over multiple physical sites as long as it's within the same organization
and managed by a centralized IT support team and network.
- There are no limits on the number of servers, workstations, printers, domains or locally attached printers.
- Licenses may be used with any supported operating system, or transferred between operating systems
(e.g. migrate from Windows to Linux).
All licenses include basic email support and access to minor point release upgrades
(e.g. 12.0 to 12.1, etc.). A small fee may apply to access major upgrades
(e.g. 11.x to 12.x). New organizations are encouraged to purchase the
Implementation Pack which provides access to 12-months of upgrades and additional support options.
License Examples
-
A small business has 5 computers, one Windows 2003 server with 5 user accounts. PaperCut NG is free until such a time where the network grows over 5 users!
-
A school has one Windows Domain network, with 24 computers, 6 printers, a single print server, 125 students and 35 staff.
They would purchase a single PaperCut education license for 100 to 500 users.
-
An education institution has one network domain, with 150 clients (computers), 30 printers and 3 print servers and 800
users. Two print servers run Windows and the other Mac. They would purchase a single PaperCut education license for 500
to 1000 users and this can be used on both the Mac and Windows servers.
-
A Company has one network domain covering 300 users across 5 physical site offices. Each physical site has its own
print server. IT services are centrally managed by one IT support team. This organization would purchase a commercial license
for 300 users and the Implementation Pack to gain access to 12 months upgrade and support.
-
A chain of real estate agents wishes to purchase a license for each office. Each office is a separate
independent franchise and IT services are managed on each site separately. Because IT services are not
centralized, a separate license is required for each site. The chain may however be eligible for a bulk
purchase discount.
