"The publisher could not be verified" prompt running executable from network

Running pc-client.exe, pc-local-client-cache.exe or the equivalent release station executables from a file share over the local network may result in a popup dialog saying "The publisher could not be verified" and asking to Run or Cancel.

This will happen on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later including Vista in situations where client machines and file servers are not part of a domain. In order to suppress this message:

  • run gpedit.msc
  • go to User Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> Windows Components >> Attachment Manager
  • add "*.exe" to the "Inclusion list for moderate risk file types" setting
